Ischitella is a small village located in the upper Gargano region, perched on a hill at an elevation of 314 meters above sea level, enjoying a prime location between Lake Varano, the Adriatic coast, and the Umbra Forest. With around 4,300 residents, it maintains the genuine atmosphere of a community that has preserved its traditions, away from mass tourism yet very close to the main attractions in the area.
The historic center is a maze of narrow streets and small squares that embody the centuries-old history of the village. The many churches scattered throughout the area reflect the deep spirituality of the community, while the ancient oven, farmhouses, and artisan workshops showcase a vibrant material culture. Not far away lies Lake Varano, the largest coastal lake in Italy, renowned for its natural beauty and for the cultivation of eels and oysters. It is an ideal spot for cycling, canoeing, or simply enjoying the tranquility of nature.
In about ten minutes, one can reach the sandy beaches of the Gargano coastline, and in just over twenty minutes, one can enter the heart of the Umbra Forest, the green lung of the Gargano National Park. From Ischitella, it is easy to embark on explorations of picturesque villages such as Vico del Gargano, listed among the most beautiful in Italy, or to venture towards spiritual destinations like San Giovanni Rotondo and Monte Sant’Angelo, the latter being a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The central location of the village allows for daily exploration of different aspects of the Gargano: the Tremiti Islands with their crystal-clear waters, the white cliffs of Peschici and Vieste, the pine forests and mountain trails, and the culinary traditions that have been passed down through generations. Thus, Ischitella offers a perfect balance of nature, culture, and relaxation, making it ideal for those seeking an authentic experience in one of the most captivating regions of Puglia.
