Maratea, often referred to as “the pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea,” is the only municipality in Basilicata that overlooks the Tyrrhenian coast. It boasts a coastline of 32 kilometers that borders Campania to the north and Calabria to the south. The northernmost district is Acquafredda, home to the B&B Nonna Vincenza, while the southernmost is Castrocucco. This unique location provides Maratea with a diverse and enchanting landscape, featuring a rugged coastline with hidden coves, dramatic cliffs, and dark sandy beaches typical of the region. Among these, the famous Spiaggia Nera gets its name from the deep color of its volcanic sand.
In addition to its remarkable natural heritage, Maratea is known as “the city of 44 churches” due to the high concentration of religious buildings, constructed in various eras and reflecting a rich artistic and spiritual history. One of its most iconic symbols is the 21-meter-high statue of the Redeemer, which overlooks Monte San Biagio. From this peak, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views, with clear days offering sights across three regions: Basilicata, Calabria, and Campania.
Another natural wonder not to be missed is the Marina di Maratea Cave, also known as the Cave of Wonders. Discovered accidentally during the construction of the SS18, it is located 76 meters above sea level and is a true karst gem, open to visitors only during specific times of the year. In July and August, it can be accessed without a reservation, while visits must be arranged in advance during the rest of the year.
Acquafredda di Maratea, where the B&B Nonna Vincenza is situated, presents a variety of natural beauties and unmissable routes. Among the most captivating beaches are Luppa and Anginarra, as well as the picturesque Spiaggia del Sombrero, also known as Grotta della Scala. The Porticello Beach, along with the Dragon Cave and the Doves Cave, are delightful spots of paradise nestled in unspoiled nature that deserve a visit.
For hiking enthusiasts, trails to Campolongo or the Piana degli Zingari offer scenic routes with stunning views of the sea and Mediterranean vegetation. Lastly, Villa Nitti, a historic residence that once belonged to the renowned statesman Francesco Saverio Nitti, now serves as an important cultural center.
Maratea is a captivating destination that enchants with its blend of sea, nature, history, and spirituality, making it a unique place to explore and experience in every season.
