The area surrounding the Rifugio del Volpe is part of the Bolognese Apennines, a region abundant in forests, valleys, and small villages where nature still retains its genuine character. The refuge is situated at approximately 500 meters above sea level, within a tiny hamlet made up of only five houses clustered around a small square, offering an environment of complete peace where the silence is broken solely by the sounds of the forest.
This destination is especially popular among hikers, trekking enthusiasts, mountain bikers, bird watchers, and those seeking to spend a few days away from traffic and the hectic pace of city life. Nearby, there is an extensive network of trails crossing chestnut groves, beech woods, and typical Apennine landscapes, providing routes suitable for both leisurely walks and more challenging excursions.
Just a few kilometers away is Riola di Vergato, accessible by train via the Porrettana railway line connecting Bologna and Pistoia. The town serves as a convenient hub for services, shops, and restaurants, and is also known for the striking Church of Santa Maria Assunta, designed by the famous Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, the only work he completed in Italy.
The area also offers many opportunities to explore the historical and natural heritage of the Bolognese Apennines. Within a short distance are the Rocchetta Mattei, one of Italy’s most fascinating and unique castles; the Regional Park of the Suviana and Brasimone Lakes, perfect for walks, picnics, and outdoor activities; as well as the charming villages of Gaggio Montano, Vergato, Grizzana Morandi, and Porretta Terme, renowned for its thermal waters.
This is the perfect destination for those wishing to experience an authentic connection with nature. Here, you won’t find crowded venues, shopping malls, or nightlife, but pristine landscapes, starry skies, fresh air, and the joy of rediscovering a slower rhythm, marked by the seasons and the beauty of the Apennines.
