Marostica, with its 14,000 residents, is situated in a prime location at the foot of the Asiago Plateau, just eight kilometers from Bassano del Grappa. Due to its strategic setting, it is easily accessible from major art cities in the Veneto region, such as Venice, Treviso, Padua, Vicenza, and Verona, making it an ideal base for exploring the area.
Known as "the city of chess," Marostica owes its reputation to the picturesque Piazza degli Scacchi, dominated by two castles and featuring a large checkered pavement. Every two years, the famous Living Chess Game takes place here, a spectacular event that has drawn visitors from around the globe since 1923. Over 550 costumed participants reenact a historical event based on the legend of Lionora, a young woman contested by two noble knights, whose fate is decided by a chess match instead of a duel.
The region offers much more than just history and culture; nature and sports enthusiasts will find a wide variety of outdoor activities suitable for all ages and interests.
