Tortoreto is a destination that combines the allure of the sea with the history and culture of its ancient village. With a three-kilometer stretch of fine sandy beach that is spacious and well-maintained, the coastline is enhanced by a tree-lined promenade featuring thousands of palm and pine trees, scenic bike paths, and well-kept gardens. The beach establishments provide a variety of services, while events, markets, and venues bring life to summer evenings, creating a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.
The historic center of Tortoreto, characterized by its small squares, narrow alleyways, arches, and brick towers, retains the charm of a fortified medieval village. Once a residence for the local nobility, it now houses the town hall and hosts significant cultural events. Tortoreto's roots trace back to prehistoric times, with settlements dating back to the 5th millennium BC, while the Roman era left notable remnants, including the “Castrum Salini” mentioned by Pliny the Elder.
As one ascends from the seaside towards Tortoreto Alta, in the Muracche area, the remains of a Roman villa can be found, featuring mosaic floors and an agricultural area overlooking what was once a more inland sea. Additional Roman artifacts are revealed in the Terrabianca district, where cisterns for water collection, a necropolis, and items such as amphorae, coins, and tools provide evidence of the region's long and rich history.
