The area where Cascina Mottainai is located lies on the initial hills of the Emilian Apennines, in the Carteria di Sesto region of Pianoro, south of Bologna. This region combines the convenience of being close to the city with the authenticity of untouched natural landscapes. In just a twenty-minute drive, one can reach the center of Bologna, known for its porticos, museums, and historic squares, while around the farmhouse, a hilly environment unfolds, characterized by woods, gullies, and small trails winding through meadows and clearings.
Here begins the Parco dei Gessi Bolognesi and the Calanchi dell’Abbadessa, a protected area of significant natural and geological interest, renowned for its karst formations and the diverse flora and fauna that inhabit it. Roe deer, hares, foxes, and wild boars are common sights, and with a bit of luck, one might even spot a wolf, which has returned to these areas in recent years.
The region features numerous hiking trails, including the Via Mater Dei, a spiritual and scenic route that connects the main Marian shrines of the Bolognese Apennines. These well-marked and accessible paths offer panoramic walks suitable for every season: in spring with blooming meadows, in summer with cool, shady forests, in autumn with the warm colors of foliage, and in winter with the tranquility of bare landscapes.
For cycling enthusiasts, the area is also highly regarded by cyclists and mountain biking fans, due to the routes that traverse hills, ridges, and unpaved paths immersed in greenery. Within a few kilometers, one can alternate between different experiences: cultural visits to Bologna's monuments, excursions through gullies and caves, tastings of local products in nearby villages, or simply enjoying a day in nature.
This land maintains a slow and authentic pace, offering moments of peace while still allowing quick access to the city and its amenities.
