The Bed & Breakfast Le Fontanacce is nestled in one of the most enchanting areas of the Modenese Apennines, a true paradise for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Located in the Val di Lamola, now known as the Ospitale Valley, it serves as an ideal starting point for hiking, trekking, mountain biking, and winter sports.
This region is traversed by the historic Via Romea, a route that has been used for centuries by pilgrims heading to Rome. The surrounding trails weave through mountain villages, beech forests, and ancient chestnut trees, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in unspoiled nature and discover breathtaking views. The B&B provides maps of the valley and informational materials about the routes, making it easier to plan excursions.
Among the most picturesque destinations is Lake Pratignano, situated at an altitude of 1307 meters, which can be reached in about an hour and a half via trail 409. Surrounded by beech trees and meadows, it is a site of significant botanical interest, home to the rare Drosera Rotundifolia, a carnivorous plant. Another must-see is Lake Scaffaiolo, the highest lake in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, located at 1783 meters. Fed by rainwater and melting snow, it is encircled by grassy pastures and blueberry bushes. The Duca degli Abruzzi refuge, near the lake, offers refreshments featuring local mountain specialties. The route to reach it from the B&B follows the Via Romea to Monte Spigolino (trail 411), then continues on trail 00, totaling about three and a half hours of hiking.
The Passo Croce Arcana, at 1669 meters, is a meeting point between Emilia and Tuscany. On clear days, visitors can admire the Apuan Alps, other mountain ranges, and the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian seas from here. The pass is also steeped in history: during World War II, it was part of the Gothic Line, as evidenced by the monument dedicated to fallen Alpini soldiers. Every year, on the first Sunday of August, a gathering is held in their memory. Additionally, the pass serves as an excellent observation point for viewing shooting stars on the night of San Lorenzo. It can be reached from the B&B in about two and a half hours on foot via trail 415 or in half an hour by car.
For winter sports enthusiasts, the B&B is conveniently located near the main ski resorts of the Apennines. Monte Cimone and Passo del Lupo offer modern facilities and slopes for all skill levels. In Sestola, a cable car provides direct access to the slopes. During winter, the Capanno Tassoni Refuge, just a half-hour walk from the B&B, rents out cross-country skiing equipment and snowshoes, and organizes enchanting daytime and nighttime snowshoe walks.
Hikers and mountain bikers will find numerous trails winding through forests and plateaus, passing through historic villages and offering stunning views. Routes such as Schiena dell’Asino, Colle dell’Acqua Marcia, and the Fellicarolo Valley provide unique opportunities to explore the area. For a relaxing walk, the village of "La Sega" can be reached in 30 minutes, with a stop at the Laghetto “Le Sorgenti” where visitors can enjoy traditional dishes and practice sport fishing for trout.
Fanano and Sestola, just a few kilometers from the B&B, offer a variety of activities, including tennis courts, a swimming pool, an ice rink, and a golf course. After a day spent outdoors, local refuges welcome hikers with typical mountain dishes, such as those served at the Capanna Tassoni Refuge or the Laghetto Le Sorgenti.
Whether it’s an excursion in nature, a sporting adventure, or simply a break from everyday chaos, the area provides an authentic and rejuvenating experience in every season.
