The area where La Portazza is located is one of the most enchanting spots in western Sicily, a region that combines ancient history, unspoiled nature, and authentic atmospheres. Just a few minutes from the historic center of Marsala, the ancient city of Lilibeo founded by the Carthaginians, the villa overlooks the Stagnone Lagoon, a protected area designated as a Natural Reserve since 1984. Here, the shallow, brackish waters, the tranquil islands, and the windmills create a timeless landscape, where the colors of sunset reflect on salt pans that appear like mirrors of silver and amber.
The Reserve is home to a rich and fragile ecosystem: it serves as an ideal habitat for numerous species of migratory birds, including pink flamingos, herons, and cormorants, which inhabit these water mirrors during their journeys between Europe and Africa. The vegetation, consisting of typically Mediterranean species like sea marigold, completes a landscape that invites silence and observation.
In the heart of the lagoon lies Mothia, the ancient Phoenician colony, accessible in just a few minutes by a small boat. It is one of the island's most fascinating archaeological sites, featuring mosaics, necropolises, and the famous Tophet, a sanctuary dedicated to Phoenician deities. The Whitaker Museum houses the main artifacts found on the island, highlighting the historical and cultural significance of this piece of land.
A few kilometers away, the Marsala coastline offers a mix of well-equipped beach establishments and stretches of wild, free beach, with clear waters and shallow seabeds, ideal for families. Water sports enthusiasts will find the Stagnone is one of the world’s most famous spots for kitesurfing, thanks to its consistent winds and unique lagoon morphology.
The location of the property allows easy access to some of Sicily's most iconic destinations: Segesta and Selinunte, with their Doric temples nestled in the countryside; Erice, a medieval village perched between sky and sea; the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, a UNESCO World Heritage site; and the Zingaro Reserve, with its scenic trails and unspoiled coves. The Egadi Islands, including Favignana, Levanzo, and Marettimo, are also very close, reachable by ferry or hydrofoil from the nearby port.
Thus, the area offers a perfect balance of natural beauty, cultural richness, authentic experiences, and relaxation opportunities, making every stay a complete immersion in the true essence of Sicily.
