The village of Serignana is situated in one of the most captivating and unspoiled areas of eastern Tuscany, within the mountainous region of the municipality of San Godenzo, in the province of Florence. It lies at the edge of the Casentino Forests, Monte Falterona, and Campigna National Park, one of the largest and most picturesque protected areas in the Apennines, where nature thrives unhindered and humans have managed to coexist in harmony with the environment. Located at an elevation of about 630 meters in a small valley at the foot of Monte Falterona, it enjoys a pleasant climate year-round and offers breathtaking views of forests, ridges, and valleys.
Nearby is Castagno d’Andrea, the birthplace of the Renaissance painter Andrea del Castagno, where visitors can explore the park's visitor center, featuring a virtual museum dedicated to the artist along with various cultural and natural initiatives. The area is crisscrossed by significant hiking trails such as the Dante Trail, the Saint Anthony Trail, the Sacred Forests Trail, and the High Way of the Parks. These well-marked paths allow for exploration of exceptionally beautiful landscapes filled with ancient beech forests, crystal-clear streams, and a rich and protected wildlife.
This region is also a crossroads of history and spirituality. Not far away is the Abbey of San Godenzo, founded in 1028, which was the site of a famous meeting among Florentine exiles in 1302, attended by Dante Alighieri. Nearby, you can admire the Acquacheta waterfalls, described in the sixteenth canto of the Inferno, and the sources of the Arno River, mentioned in the Purgatorio. Those seeking adventure can hike to the summits of Monte Falterona and Monte Falco, or engage in horseback riding, mountain biking, fishing, or winter sports such as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
The Mugello region, where Serignana marks the easternmost boundary, boasts many attractions of archaeological, cultural, and sporting interest: from the Etruscan site of Frascole to Lake Bilancino, from the Mugello racetrack to the Poggio dei Medici Golf Club, as well as museums dedicated to Giotto and Chino Chini. Everything is easily accessible in a short time, yet far enough to ensure a stay in complete tranquility and immersion in nature.
This area is perfect for those looking to rejuvenate amidst greenery, rediscover the lesser-known Tuscan history and culture, and experience authentic moments in a landscape that has continually inspired artists, poets, and travelers.
