The Chiusa Park, also known as Talon Park, is one of the largest and most picturesque green spaces in the metropolitan area of Bologna. Located in Casalecchio di Reno along the Reno River, it spans over one hundred hectares of woodlands, meadows, hedges, and cultivated fields, all within an environment that still maintains its agricultural and natural character.
Originally part of the noble Talon family estate, the park was transformed in the 18th century into an expansive landscaped property featuring a villa, gardens, and agricultural land. Today, it is a protected area of community interest (SIC-ZPS “Boschi di San Luca e del Reno”) due to the richness of its natural habitats and wildlife. The oak and hornbeam forests are home to numerous birds and small mammals, including rare species like the spectacled salamander.
Its location is particularly valuable, situated at the edge of Bologna and serving as a vital ecological corridor between the plain and the initial Apennine hills. Within the park, paths wind through lavender fields, blooming meadows, and wooded areas, making it ideal for walking or cycling. It is no surprise that the park is intersected by important trekking and cycling routes, such as the Ciclovia del Sole (EuroVelo 7), the Via degli Dei connecting Bologna to Florence, the Via della Lana e della Seta, and the Via Francesca della Sambuca.
From the hilltops, spectacular views of Bologna and the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca, which overlooks the city from the Guard Hill, can be seen. Nearby, there are other natural parks of significant interest, such as the Pliocene Contrafforte and the Bolognese Gypsum, along with villages and churches that reflect the millennia-long history of the area.
Therefore, the Chiusa Park is a place where nature, history, and culture converge. It is frequented daily by walkers, families, athletes, and travelers exploring the Apennine trails, all in search of a peaceful oasis and an authentic connection with nature just a short distance from the center of Bologna.
