Montecoronaro is a small mountain village in the municipality of Verghereto, nestled among the woods and hills of the Tuscan-Romagnol Apennines, at the foot of Mount Fumaiolo. Although it is now home to only a few dozen permanent residents, the village has a significant history: it was once a strategic transit point and housed the customs office that managed the borders between the Papal States and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Today, one can still see remnants from that era, such as the boundary mile marker, which remind us of the village's central role in past centuries.
The area is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. The trails winding through the woods lead to the sources of the Savio and Tevere rivers, offering scenic walks and unspoiled views. Hiking aficionados can traverse sections of the famous Rimini–La Verna trail, a route that combines nature, spirituality, and history, passing by ancient shrines like that of Sant’Alberico and La Verna. Additionally, numerous marked paths lead to shelters, pastures, and clearings, perfect for those seeking peace and quiet.
During the summer months, the village comes alive with activities organized by the local pro loco and popular festivals that have gained regional recognition. The wild boar festival in July, the water-cooked festival in August, and the Stincobirrata on the eve of Ferragosto are events that attract visitors from all around the area, offering traditional dishes and communal moments.
Montecoronaro maintains a slow and authentic pace of life, far from mass tourism, yet rich in traditions and connections with nature. It serves as an ideal starting point for those looking to alternate days of hiking and spiritual walks with moments of relaxation in a serene and genuine setting, immersed in the green heart of the Apennines.
