Trebiciano – Trebce is a small karst village located on the ridge surrounding Trieste, just a few minutes’ drive from the city center, yet immersed in an authentic rural setting. It has a population of just over 800 residents, many of whom belong to the Slovene linguistic minority, and it has managed to maintain its architectural and cultural identity over time, avoiding excessive urban development and preserving its typical stone houses.
The village is ideally situated for exploring the trails and routes of the Karst, easily accessible on foot without the need for special equipment. Strolling through the quiet streets, one encounters the “casite,” dry stone shelters that narrate the history of past agricultural work, and uncovers more than 180 local place names, a testament to the community’s memory and efforts.
The heart of the village is the square in front of the Church of St. Andrew the Apostle, built in 1864, which serves as a starting point for hikes and a place of remembrance, featuring a monument to the fallen of the Great War and a large karst rock dedicated to the victims of World War II. The area retains centuries-old traditions, such as that of women who, in the past, walked to Trieste carrying milk, vegetables, and clean laundry.
From the village, the view opens up to the typical landscapes of the Karst, with a mix of meadows, forests, and limestone rocks, where the border is crossed almost unnoticed, except for the greeting from a Slovene mobile operator. Here, nature intertwines with history and culture, providing an experience far from the more frequented tourist spots, yet rich in authenticity and deep connections to the land.
