Just 5 minutes from Sarnico, on Lake Iseo, Adrara San Martino is located in a picturesque hillside area, halfway between Bergamo and Brescia, only 20 minutes from Orio al Serio Airport and 40 minutes from Milan. Additionally, it is close to Franciacorta, renowned for its culinary and wine routes. This charming village sits at an altitude of 355 meters and has around 2,150 residents, with a territory covering approximately 12.53 km².
The earliest historical records concerning Adrara date back to the year 1000. Its strategic location along an ancient route connecting Bergamo and Brescia, which crossed the Oglio River near Calepio and branched out towards Sarnico, allowed the village to witness significant historical events, from Etruscan, Gallic, and Roman dominations to barbarian, feudal, Venetian, and Napoleonic influences. Along these routes, archaeological finds such as tombs and artifacts from the Roman era have been discovered, and the remains of an Etruscan bridge over the Oglio River can still be admired.
Adrara played an important role as a fief, associated with two noble families, the Longhis and the Alessandris, who established a renowned school in ancient times, attracting students from across the valley. The buildings in the area are characterized by the use of local gray sandstone, while from the 17th century onward, Sarnico stone has been utilized for door and window frames. Earlier constructions also feature details in local rough-hewn stone, visible in the streets of the historic center of Adrara, which boasts a rich architectural heritage ranging from the Romanesque to the Neoclassical style.
