The Crete Senesi extend southeast of Siena, in a landscape that is truly one-of-a-kind, shaped over the centuries by water, wind, and human labor. Here, the soft, rolling clay hills create an endless horizon dotted with solitary cypress trees, brick farmhouses, and fields that change color with the seasons. In spring, the meadows don a vibrant green, swaying in the breeze; in summer, golden wheat alternates with sunflowers, while in autumn, the plowed earth reveals clay, creating enchanting violet reflections.
This land is home to exceptional flavors: the famous Crete pecorino, made unique by the wild herbs that infuse the milk, the DOP extra virgin olive oil “Terre di Siena,” prized white truffles, and high-quality grains. Medieval villages and historical architecture are scattered throughout the area, from the impressive Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore, featuring frescoes by Sodoma and Signorelli, to the walls of Buonconvento, from the Grancia di Cuna to the castle of San Giovanni d'Asso. Asciano, the historical capital, houses artistic treasures like the Basilica of Sant'Agata and Palazzo Corboli, while Rapolano is famous for its thermal baths and travertine stone.
Visiting the Crete Senesi means immersing oneself in a timeless landscape, where nature, history, and traditions blend in a harmony that captivates in every season.
