Lessinia is a plateau located to the north of Verona province, a place where nature, history, and culture blend harmoniously. Malga Laben is situated right in the heart of this ancient land, at an altitude of over 1,000 meters, in the Cimbrian district of Pozze, which is now part of the municipality of Velo Veronese. Here, the landscape unfolds into green meadows, pastures dotted with dry stone walls, and forests of beech and fir, creating an ideal environment for those seeking tranquility, silence, and a genuine connection with the mountains.
Lessinia is rich in evidence of Cimbrian culture, a Germanic people who settled in this area during the Middle Ages, leaving a lasting mark on the language, architecture, and traditions. Old stone hamlets, votive capitals, paved paths, and living place names tell a quiet yet present story, which can be experienced by walking through the villages or conversing with the locals. Giazza, located just a few kilometers from Malga Laben, is the last village where Cimbrian is still spoken and serves as the cultural heart of this linguistic minority.
From a natural perspective, the plateau offers extraordinary scenery and remarkable biodiversity. Among the most captivating destinations are the Ponte di Veja, an impressive rock formation that legend has it inspired even Dante; the Spluga della Preta, one of the deepest caves in Europe; the Molina Waterfalls; the Covoli of Camposilvano; and the Valley of the Sphinxes, a true "stone city" shaped by time. There are also numerous high-altitude pastures, where traditional grazing is still practiced in the summer, contributing to the preservation of the rural landscape and the production of typical cheeses and cured meats.
The region is crisscrossed by an extensive network of trails suitable for hikers of all levels, including several stretches of the European Path E5. Visitors can embark on easy scenic walks or more challenging treks, as well as mountain biking excursions or snowshoeing in the winter months, when the snow transforms everything into a muffled, fairy-tale setting.
Lessinia is also a land of flavors: Monte Veronese DOP cheese, brogna sheep salami, gnocchi sbatui, mountain honey, and many other products showcase the territory through taste. Numerous mountain huts and trattorias provide refreshments and typical cuisine, often accessible via walking or cycling routes.
In this unique context, Malga Laben serves as an ideal starting point for exploring the plateau slowly and deeply, uncovering an authentic mountain rich in stories, nature, and silence.
