Altrocanto is located in Farindola, a small village in Abruzzo perched on a hilltop overlooking the valley of the upper Tavo River, dominated by the grandeur of Gran Sasso d’Italia and the striking peak of Monte Camicia. This area is within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, one of the largest and most picturesque protected areas in Europe, where nature showcases its diversity with forests, plateaus, springs, canyons, and meadows interspersed with ancient villages and historically significant places of worship.
Farindola is renowned for its Pecorino cheese, a Slow Food presidium and unique in the world for being made with pork rennet, a tradition passed down through generations and preserved by the local women. The Casera Consortile, located just a short walk from the establishment, offers the chance to purchase and learn about this exceptional product along with other local specialties.
The location is ideal for hiking enthusiasts, walkers, and outdoor activities. The trails winding through forests and clearings lead to breathtaking sites like the canyon of Vallone d’Angora, the wild Gravone, and the Voltigno plateau. Close by is the Rigopiano wildlife area, home to chamois, deer, and other typical species of the Apennines, while further up lies the vast Campo Imperatore plateau, famous for its stunning views.
The surrounding region is rich in historical and artistic heritage. Castles, shrines, abbeys, and ancient hermitages alternate with beautiful villages such as Penne, known for its red bricks and cobblestone streets, Loreto Aprutino, famous for its olive oil and historic center, and Castelli, renowned for its artistic ceramics. Also easily accessible are Castel del Monte, Calascio with its spectacular fortress, and Santo Stefano di Sessanio, an authentic medieval gem.
Being close to Pescara allows for a combination of exploring the inland while also enjoying some time by the sea, with equipped beaches, seafood restaurants, and city museums. Therefore, Farindola serves as the perfect starting point to discover the most authentic Abruzzo, where nature, history, and traditions coexist in a still pristine balance.
