In the heart of Abruzzo, at the foot of the majestic Gran Sasso wall, Altrocanto invites guests to a secluded location surrounded by extraordinary landscapes rich in history and traditions. This establishment is the result of the restoration of an old kiln from the early 1900s, transformed into a welcoming residence that embodies a lifestyle choice and a hospitality project focused on sustainability, environmental respect, and the enhancement of the local area.

Altrocanto features five rooms, each with its own character and unique style. The spaces are warm and thoughtfully designed, with parquet floors, private bathrooms, and reading nooks. Two rooms are located on the ground floor, one of which is equipped for individuals with disabilities, while upstairs, under the exposed wooden beams, intimate and bright rooms open up, some with lofts and private terraces. The furnishings blend antique pieces, repurposed items, and modern furniture, creating a cozy and authentic atmosphere.

Breakfast is a communal experience, offering homemade sweets, cookies, jams, and juices served in the dining room. Throughout the day, guests can unwind in reading corners, by the fireplace, or in the garden, enjoying the serenity of the surroundings and the Wi-Fi available throughout the property.

The culinary offerings emphasize zero-kilometer dining, prioritizing local, organic, and seasonal ingredients. Flours, oils, Abruzzo wines, and cheeses like the renowned Pecorino di Farindola enhance simple yet refined dishes, featured on a menu that changes every two weeks according to the availability of local producers. Vegetarian options are always available, and vegan dishes can be provided upon request. The intimate restaurant setting accommodates up to twenty-five guests in a relaxed and well-maintained atmosphere.

The establishment is entirely eco-friendly, utilizing renewable energy sources, natural materials, and environmentally conscious practices. Rainwater harvesting, energy production from photovoltaic and solar thermal systems, biomass heating, and the use of eco-friendly cleaning products reflect a strong commitment to sustainability. Even the soaps are handmade, crafted with olive oil and essential oils.

Altrocanto is situated within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, in an area of remarkable scenic and cultural richness. Farindola, famous for its Slow Food-preserved pecorino, serves as an ideal starting point for excursions, visits to historic villages, sanctuaries, and castles, or to explore the Vallone d’Angora canyon and the Campo Imperatore plateau. Rigopiano and the park's information center are just a few minutes away, while nearby are the towns of Penne and Loreto Aprutino, the Sanctuary of San Gabriele, and the famous Rocca di Calascio. Pescara, with its beach and vibrant urban life, is only an hour's drive away.

Altrocanto is a refuge where one can rediscover time for oneself amidst nature, culture, and authentic flavors, all within an ethical and conscious hospitality project.
Rooms and Rates
Breakfast is a time for togetherness, featuring homemade pastries, cookies, jams, and juices served in the dining area.
The Altrocanto restaurant is a cozy and inviting place where the cuisine reflects the local area and its authenticity. In a warm and familial atmosphere, the culinary offerings are based on locally sourced ingredients, carefully selected from small producers and artisans, aligned with the seasons and favoring organic and short supply chain products.

Each dish tells the story of Abruzzo through simple and genuine flavors, with a streamlined menu that changes periodically to ensure freshness and variety. The recipes, inspired by tradition yet open to creative influences, are crafted from local flours and oils, seasonal vegetables, carefully selected meats, and typical cheeses such as Pecorino di Farindola. The selection of Abruzzese wines complements each course perfectly.

The dining room, warm and private, accommodates a limited number of guests to guarantee a slow and relaxed tasting experience. Soft background music, dim lighting, and attention to detail help create an environment where time seems to slow down, allowing for the enjoyment of good company and fine dining.

Special consideration is also given to vegetarian and vegan guests, with options designed to meet all dietary needs. The ethical and sustainable commitment is reflected in the choice of products from Fair Trade and Libera Terra, reaffirming a philosophy that views cooking not just as a profession, but as a gesture of respect for the land and its inhabitants.

Altrocanto

Area Collina

Altrocanto is located in Farindola, a small village in Abruzzo perched on a hilltop overlooking the valley of the upper Tavo River, dominated by the grandeur of Gran Sasso d’Italia and the striking peak of Monte Camicia. This area is within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, one of the largest and most picturesque protected areas in Europe, where nature showcases its diversity with forests, plateaus, springs, canyons, and meadows interspersed with ancient villages and historically significant places of worship.

Farindola is renowned for its Pecorino cheese, a Slow Food presidium and unique in the world for being made with pork rennet, a tradition passed down through generations and preserved by the local women. The Casera Consortile, located just a short walk from the establishment, offers the chance to purchase and learn about this exceptional product along with other local specialties.

The location is ideal for hiking enthusiasts, walkers, and outdoor activities. The trails winding through forests and clearings lead to breathtaking sites like the canyon of Vallone d’Angora, the wild Gravone, and the Voltigno plateau. Close by is the Rigopiano wildlife area, home to chamois, deer, and other typical species of the Apennines, while further up lies the vast Campo Imperatore plateau, famous for its stunning views.

The surrounding region is rich in historical and artistic heritage. Castles, shrines, abbeys, and ancient hermitages alternate with beautiful villages such as Penne, known for its red bricks and cobblestone streets, Loreto Aprutino, famous for its olive oil and historic center, and Castelli, renowned for its artistic ceramics. Also easily accessible are Castel del Monte, Calascio with its spectacular fortress, and Santo Stefano di Sessanio, an authentic medieval gem.

Being close to Pescara allows for a combination of exploring the inland while also enjoying some time by the sea, with equipped beaches, seafood restaurants, and city museums. Therefore, Farindola serves as the perfect starting point to discover the most authentic Abruzzo, where nature, history, and traditions coexist in a still pristine balance.
